I have just recently noticed this. I can’t imagine that I would not have noticed it before if it was happening, seeing that she sleeps with me. But a week or so ago she went into our bedroom where my husband was in the bed with our new dachshund puppy. The year and a half old puppy and the new dachshund puppy are best friends. But when I went to get the older dog to bring her into the other room with me, I noticed that the bed was wet where she was lying.

Tonight, again she was with the younger puppy, and again the bed was wet where she had been lying.

I brought her into the den with me and she was lying on the couch. Then she got up to go lie on the floor. I assumed it was because the floor was cool and it’s hot here. But then I felt the protective cover that I have over the couch, and it was wet. I had noticed earlier that she was bathing herself in that area, but I hadn’t thought anything about it really.

I went to the Internet to try to get some information, and a surprising amount of the articles included the question of whether or not incontinent young dogs should be euthanized. What???

Uhhhh…Hell no!

I think I may have mentioned it to you all earlier, but this is my dog that has terrible nightmares… Or seizures. I’m not really sure how to tell the difference. She shakes and jerks in her sleep, and whines. I just hold her and talk to her and she wakes up and stops the jerking. I’ve told myself that if she was really having seizures, that my touch or my voice would not stop the seizure. But now I’m wondering if these two things are related?

It has broken my heart. Not because of the mess, but because I don’t want there to be something wrong with her. This dog is my strength. We ar soul sisters. I’m really scared.

I don’t know what it will mean for her for the rest of her life. I don’t know if there’s anything that can be done to help her.

Do any of you have any experience with or knowledge of this problem?

Is it possible she has a uti?

I had a female dog that had some incontinence when she was older. She would mostly leak urine when she was sleeping. She took medicine that helped and she wore a diaper.

I would take her to the vet and see what they say.

My german shepherd used to urinate during the night. She slept on one of our older couches that was covered with a sheet and occasionally it was wet.

Took her to the vet, was advised that sometimes this happens with female dogs who are spayed. He put her on Proin and she has had no issues since then (years), maybe a handful of times when she woke up wet. Helped tremendously.

Your dog might also have an infection, I'd get her to the vet.

I had a Jack Russell that urinated 2x during the night. Took her to the vet and she had Cushings Disease. While Cushings is unlikely in a 1.5 y/o dog, I second the others recommendations to take her to the vet. Could be something simple like a UTI.

I’ll take her to the vet first thing Monday morning. I just prayed something like a UTI.

I’m very sad to say, and I know it’s pathetic, but I count on her for so much emotional support right now.

A dog with a UTI goes constantly, ime. If you've ever had one, you'd know. They wouldn't just be leaking while sleeping. That would be more of an incontinence issue vs UTI although it never hurts to check to be sure.

There are medications for incontinence that work really well for some dogs. I haven't really been that lucky with mine but I know tons of people who have dogs for whom it works. Also, some respond well to chiropractic adjustments. Some respond to supplements - one is corn silk. Some have something in their diet that may be contributing to the issue so you'd have to figure out what it could be. Removing corn/wheat/soy has helped some dogs.

I've had several incontinent old females. In my breed, you're incredibly lucky to have old girls so I'm not going to complain. I just get crib sheets, protective pads, bath mats, etc for spots where they sleep. You can also get the panties that they wear during heat cycles and put pads inside. It's all do-able.

I’m just so sad this is happening to her.

It’s not fair that I depend on her so much.

When she lost urine when she was in the bedroom with my husband, I just assumed it was because I shut her up in that room while I ran some errands because she does not do well alone. She tears rooms apart from separation anxiety. So when she had those accidents in that room while I was gone, I just assumed she needed to go outside but couldn’t get out of the room.

But where we, meaning me and the dogs, sleep in the den, all she has to do is come rub noses with me and let me know that she needs to go outside.

She is acting anxious. I am half scared to even go to the vet. But I will call them tomorrow.

New behavior you have to rule out UTI.
But she may also be dog that leaks. My 14.5 yo lab has always leaked even before her spay. She has been on Proin her whole life. It prevents the leaking unless she is extremely worn out.

Oh, thanks for asking.

It is been a pretty packed week, and I have not made it to the vet. I’m ashamed to say.

But part of the reason I haven’t made it is because I have not noticed any more incontinence. When she sleeps with me on the couch, she moves to the floor and back to the couch three or four times during the night. This past week I have felt the cover on the couch each time she’s gotten down and there has been no dampness. So until the first of the month and some money comes in, And as long as there are no further complications, I’m going to have to play the "wait and see" game.

Also, I might’ve mentioned to you all that my husband is getting up and around better these days. And he is pushing about 3/4 of a mile with an occupational therapist once a week and then with me three other days of the week. Anyway, the puppy, Bella, always rides with him. Just sits in his lap and enjoys the scenery.

Last week, she jumped off of his lap… more like flying actually, and missed the grass, and plowed face first into the curb about six inches away from a storm drain she would’ve gone through if she had hit it just right.

She jumped right up and came to me, and continued on the journey with my husband for the rest of his push. She never acted differently and there was no bleeding at all. I didn’t notice anything wrong with her. Then the next morning, I noticed a little scrape over one eye but a larger scrape over her other eye. The small scrape went away quickly, but the bigger scrape kept getting a little more swollen. At about the third day it was really scaring me. And I couldn’t tell if it was a swollen place from the fall, or if there was some kind of growth happening. Because the top of it looked a little bit like a wart / growth. I haven’t slept for days!

But yesterday, as I was cleaning it with a damp wet like, all of a sudden the rough crusty part on top came off just like a scab. And underneath was fresh new skin growing. And without the big scab, it didn’t look so swollen. So I guess we lucked out this time and she’s OK, thank God!
