I'm about to jump into Robin Hobb Assassin series -- any thoughts on this? GRRM seems to like the series and while I wait for him to ever so slowly complete his series, this looked interesting.

The new Dresdin book is supposed to come out this year. We'll see.

Idk if this has been mentioned prior but the Dark Tower series by Stephen King is (in my opinion) the best fantasy series I've ever read.

It's such a great combo of fantasy, action, mystery & horror. It's like the perfect concoction of goodness with great balance!

Since I haven't seen it mentioned, for those who are fans of Sanderson, I can't recommend The Cradle series by Will Wight highly enough.

Jack Vance's Lyonesse Trilogy: Suldrun's Garden, The Green Pearl, and Madauc. Vance is a terrific story-teller and wrote many books in fantasy, science-fiction and mystery genres.

And that's the beauty of this thread, even if stuff gets mentioned along the way, it's always good if it pops back up.

I think this book thread was my first ever 'sanctuary' thread where I got to talk about some cool stuff with other readers. SF/Fantasy books are a nice place to visit during all the craziness while recovering...

If you enjoy urban fantasy, I cannot recommend the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka enough!

Especially if you enjoy the Dresden series by Jim Butcher.

It's a bit darker than Dresden, but really enjoyable.

Simon R Green has a couple of different sets that I'm reading. Ghostfinders and Ishmael Jones are both good. And his Nightside series has ended up being a favorite.

I've been dabbling with Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles, too. Pretty good, though I am not as far into that one yet because I discovered Jacka and have been primarily obsessed with what happens next in that series.

Just a few general suggestions from the urban fantasy corner!

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series.

And of course anything by Ursula LeGuin but especially "Left Hand of Darkness". Try the "Gifts", "Voices", "Powers" trio and "Lavinia" was great too.

I just finished Wanderers by Chuck Wendig. Phew, that one was kind of a stressful read because it's all too real. It's end of the world stuff, a la The Stand, Station Eleven. I like most of Wendig's stuff anyway, but this isn't the same fluff as Miriam Black.

One of my favorite fantasy series. I came to love Fitz and the Fool characters and have read the entire series (nine books all together) many times. I think the middle three books are my favorites.

It would also not harm you to read the Liveship series and Dragonkeeper series in between as they fill in a lot of backstory and fleshes out the world quite a lot.

I think the order I would read them would be

Farseer Trilogy

Liveship Series

Tawny Man Trilogy <--- Favorites.

Dragon Keepers Series

Fitz and the Fool Series

I second this and everything else EvolvingSoul said about this series. Robin Hobb is fantastic.

As a writer, I'd love to recommend my own work... I have six novels out that are all set in the same epic high/dark fantasy world... it's been described as like a grittier Lord of the Rings meets A Song of Ice and Fire. However, I recognize the rules against self promotion and, while I'm not concerned about anonymity as much, I understand the concerns others have about it.

My favorite fantasy series are all pretty old and classic; Lord of the Rings, Dragonlance Chronicles (and the associated satellite books, etc), and despite the fact that they are children's books/YA, the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. I was a HUGE fan of Piers Anthony as a teenager, but when I try to reread his work, well... it hasn't aged well and I feel awkward reading some of what he wrote. He hits a LOT of taboo subjects that I didn't fully 'get' when I was young, and coming from an older man they're a little awkward.

Most anything by Neil Gaiman - American Gods, Stardust, etc - is amazing. I'm also a fan of the Star Wars EU books, and even though they are -technically- Science Fiction... come on. The Jedi are Space Wizards, and you can't convince me otherwise.

For general historical 'fantasy' reading, I'm going to suggest the Poetic Eddas of Norse Mythology. When I was an active and devout pagan, these were the basis of the mythos behind my spirituality, but even just as sagas and epic stories, I really, really recommend them. Good stuff.

A Walloped recommendation goes a long way, I seem to like almost everything you've listed and liked in this thread.
