Oh…a random question.

April has the most interesting/peculiar habit. When she is sitting in a chair or on the end of a couch, she sits her booty on the arm of the couch/chair with her front legs on the seat. So her butt is way higher than her front feet.

I wonder if she is just leveling her body out a bit, or if possibly it hurts to sit "normally". She tries to do it no matter where she is sitting.

Well, shitballs! Sorry 😔

So my son tested positive for Covid tonight.

So I can’t let my sister go with me to get Maddie, because in case my son was contagious, I can’t take a chance of her getting sick.

Also, I’m pretty sure that the lady would not want me showing up with a big mask, knowing that my family had tested positive.

My sister offered to go and get the pup by herself, but I don’t think one person should do that task… Someone should be able to interact with the puppy during the trip.

But the hands-down real reason that I will not be able to go pick up my baby tomorrow is because I was counting on my son to look after my husband while I was gone. I can never be gone 4 to 5 hours from him. So, my son was going to pick up the slack. Of course, now I can’t let my son out of his room, much less go anywhere near my husband’s room.

So…dadgummit! As my daddy used to say.

The lady texted me today to make sure I was still planning on coming to get the puppy tomorrow. And I texted back "absolutely!" 🙄

I’m going to call her in the morning and let her know what has happened. I’m going to volunteer to send her the money electronically somehow… Maybe wire it through Western Union. That way she will know that I am serious about getting the dog and not just making up an excuse why I can’t come tomorrow.

I pray, she will understand and hold onto the puppy a little while longer.

Middle of the night here, sorry to see this update, but I think anyone should understand if you shared your healthcare situation? Perhaps she could bring the dog? I don't recommend your sending the money prematurely, even though you feel bad from her perspective - you're like me, overly empathetic to the other person's perpective.

Sorry about the Covid dx. Might want to check out CDC latest update on management of it. Unless you are feverish and symptomatic life goes on as usual. I get with your H that you don't want him exposed.

But the good news is Covid isn't much more than a head cold these days.

So, I texted the puppy lady and she said that she would hold Madison for me for one week. I told her I would be happy to go ahead and pay the adoption fee. It is very little.

She said she would prefer it by Venmo, if I was going to send it. So I had to get my great niece to explain to me how to set up Venmo. I am technologically impaired. So I got that done and sent her the money. And she got it! She even told me that she would refund the money if for any reason, it didn’t work out when I came down to get Madison. I assured her that I couldn’t imagine anything going wrong.

Now that I’ve said that, my husband has started coughing, has a scratchy throat, and is coughing up congestion from his throat. Not to be pessimistic, but I’m pretty sure I know what that means. And it’s pretty scary for him to have any kind of situation where coughing is involved because his diaphragm doesn’t work properly. And it’s so hard for him to clear his throat.

And last night I did not use a mask when I was helping him because I was masked with my son last night and kept away from him. So I guess maybe that means that I’ve got it too. I’m feeling fine so far, but knowing my luck…

Anyway, the best news… Besides, the fact that my husband isn’t too sick yet, is that Maddie is taken care of for a week. If I can’t get me and my family well by then, my sister is going to go down and get the puppy. I’ll just have to purchase a crate I guess for her to put the puppy in to ride back home. Maybe I can borrow one.

Test him for Covid and if positive call your Dr. Get him paxlovid. It will shorten length and intensity of virus. With his compromised state he is the poster patient for early diagnosis and treatment.

WR, I hope y'all are doing okay!

While we wait, just thought you dog lovers might want to share with me what I learned from hours spent yesterday researching zinc in dog's diets. We have an appointment this afternoon for Mink and I'm trying to have something definite to show the vet on his diet so we won't waste hundreds or even thousands of dollars chasing other diagnoses when his pattern of hair loss precisely fits that of "zinc deficient dermatosis."

Zinc is important in the dog's diet, they can't make it or store it, so commercial kibble manufacturers list the minimum quantity of zinc their ration is supposed to contain. If a feed has the AAFCO stamp of compliance on it, you'd feel sure it was sufficient, right?

Well, I learned there are 2 complications with that:

1. what kind of zinc they add as a supplement to the meat, eggs or organ meats that are natural zinc sources.
And 2. What plant matter such as grains the feed contains that tend to hinder zinc absorption in the dog's system. Some grains have a lot of phytates and phytate cancels out the zinc to where it won't be available in the gut, mixed with the plant matter. I found a list of the major phytate-rich grains, and going just from memory here, don't hold me to it precisely, the top 5 are: 1. corn, 2. wheat bran, 3. wheat, 4. oats, 5. legumes (such as peas, soybeans, lentils, chickpeas).

That might explain some of why commercial dry feeds aren't always best for certain dogs, especially fast-growing large breed pups like our boy.
Fortunately, the 2 feeds he gets each meet minimum AAFCO nutrition levels for growth of large breed dogs, and I was relieved to know neither of them list corn, wheat or legumes as ingredients anywhere down the list.

So that led me to looking at what kind of zinc the dog food producers may be using. I came across research on the relative bioavailability of zinc in dog foods and again, here's the list from memory, ranked from superior to inferior: 1. zinc gluconate or zinc piccolinate, 2. chelated zinc, 3. zinc methionine, 4. zinc sulfate, 5. zinc oxide, which is largely unavailable in the gut. So I saw that if my kibble just got sprayed with a zinc sulfate solution after the other ingredients are ground up and formed into pellets, it wouldn't be nearly as rich a source as if zinc was from the actual meat in the mix. One of my foods lists zinc sulfate, the other (the salmon) doesn't even list zinc, but it's AAFCO certified so I assume it meets the minimum requirements.

All this research was me trying to figure out just how much zinc my dog is supposed to be getting! I found that data pretty hard to locate, as minimum recommended analyses are directed at dog food manufacturers, not the individual dog, and are given as a mathematical ratio of zinc to dry matter. Finally found some veterinary research I'm going to bring with us today showing that an intact male, 1 year old, 80 pound dog needs upwards of 90 mg per kilogram of HIS weight, not the food bag's weight. I ran calculations on what we feed and found that we're there, but just barely. So any absorption issues could tip the scales to zinc deficiency for a hyper boy like our Mink.

Most of his training treats are jerky of some kind or dried liver. We use a heck of a pile of treats doing this positive training and just in managing this wild child around the house, yard and vehicles. This morning I looked at the bag of peanut butter biscuits we most often use, to save our more expensive ones. Sure enough, the #1 ingredient in them was wheat flour, then oats, then wheat bran: all are phytate rich! Could cheap cookies be the culprit?! Stay tuned....

Hope this little booklet helps anybody else save some heartache and cash, wondering what's wrong with their dog!

I did a bunch of research on what my girl needed and special diets for dogs and then calculated out the nutrients.
The easiest way for her to get her zinc and some extra protein and calcium was a raw egg and shell for 1 meal a day. It made her bare areas from allergies and dull fur super Shiney and lustrous and regrowth within 40 days.

Thanks Tushnurse! I can do that! We get our eggs from the farmer's lady who sells them so cheap and they are so much nicer than the store's. I bet he'd chow right down on all of it and thanks for offering a timeline for hair regrowth. This has been an on and off issue with him since last fall. Vets always seem to think "auto-immune" issues and I think "let's start with the food and rule out deficiencies before we go down that road." I've read too many stories on the GSD forum about what people have gone through.

So your old girl Labrador suffered with hair loss somewhere, also. Was it just around her eye rims and on the bridge of her nose, like Mink's?

She had hair loss on her belly and hips. She had developed anallergy to corn and chicken. We tried a grain and chicken free kibble but it still had contamination from other kibble at the factory.
So when I made her food rice and beef and fresh eggs plus green beans, sweet taters, spinach, broccoli. She healed up.
