What a crazy few days

An ice storm hit Friday night. Lost power in the early morning hours. It came back for a couple of hours, long enough to cook dinner, Saturday, then went out again.

The maple tree at the side of the house broke apart. We lost a few trees but no major damage to the house.

Large branches on the tree at the end of the driveway broke across the driveway while others still attached hung right down so we couldn't get the car out.

Today the ice was melted and the branches lifted enough to get out.

Not only is power out but so is cell service.

I took the kids to my mom's.
It was just to cold. We had actually spent most of yesterday in the car staying warm.

I knew things were bad but the drive to my mom's was shocking. Hydro lines and trees down across the roads everywhere. I had to detour just to get down here and it wasn't easy.

The estimated time to get power restored keeps changing. My hydro alert texts said 11pm tonight. Other people in town said theirs said 11pm Wednesday.

Either way I'll be filling some gas cans and heading back up myself to try to keep the fridge and freezer going and tending to the horses and dogs. The kids will stay down here along with the animals we brought lol. Mom thinks the frogs are cute lol

No gas stations by my house have power. Stations with power 30 minutes away have no fuel. Even stations down here have lineups.

It's a mess so of you can, send some mojo and pray for us. smile

They just declared a state of emergency in my region. There's three other areas/cities that have done the same.

I was able to get a hold of my neighbour. He said my text was the first he's had in days. He's ok. Cell service is again running for one provider, hopefully the rest are working by the time I get back up there.

I have friends in the area going through the same thing. Prolonged power outages are awful. My one friend just posted that although hydro had said it would be back in her area tonight, she just got an update that it's going to be another 2 days. Ugh.

When I moved to Kentucky in late 2008, they had a horrid ice storm right after we got there. The damage to the trees was just unimaginable - just looked like a war zone. We had no power for a few days but fortunately had 2 fireplaces we could use. The really backwoods areas didn't have power for a couple of weeks. The state is quite unprepared for weather like that on a wide scale when it comes to plows, salters, sanders, etc so people were trapped in remote areas for quite some time. We literally saw pick up trucks with salt in the back and men standing in the back shoveling it out on roads.

I worked at a gas station a hundred years ago ... it's amazing how many people don't realize that they need power to operate, too!

Prayers for you and your family and region.

It was 74 degrees last week and then snow on the ground this morning in WI…

SackOfSorry

They estimated last night for power then got a text it will be April 3rd.

The latest weather forecast is calling for more freezing rain starting tomorrow. I expect April 3rd is going to change.

I've got fuel now so I'm staying at the house to keep the generator going. My kids are staying with my mom. I doubt schools will reopen anytime soon.

That's no fun at all!!!
Saw that UP MI was also struggling and ice is mother natures pruner. We had an ice storm in 2007, and we're without power for 5 days and it got extremely cold after. We had a gennie and large fireplace and we managed. Went to the Y every 2 days for showers and so forth. The area that was Theron problem has been kept meticulously clear of limbs ever since.

Stay safe and warm.

I'm back at the house again. Came home this morning via a detour. Got thibgs set up to switch the generator then had the damn thing refuse to start!

Oil, fuel everything was fine but I just couldn't get it going. Cell service is back so I posted to the community group asking for help while I dug out the smaller generator (doesn't hook up to the extra panel).

I did an oil change on that and it started at first then after I shut it off to put more gas it it didn't start either...

A community member came by and got it going. Many people gave me their numbers and said if I need help, call. Community is really coming together.

Because it's smaller I decided to take the contents of my freezer to my mom's. Funny enough it was all still frozen (house at 7 degrees helps i guess).

So I gathered that and things the kids wanted/needed (snuggle sweaters, pillows, dd's meds).

The schoolboard is assessing day by day. Tomorrow it's all closed but there may be some that resume Thursday since one of the towns near by has their power restored.

Hopefully we will by thr weekend. For now the kids are at my mom's having a blast.

So sorry for all the weather craziness. Ice storms are horrifying. I saw awful footage of pines bending and breaking in two in upper Michigan. I’m glad your roads are good enough for you to get around and that your community is helping each other out. Hoping for an easier Spring for you moving forward.

Mother nature's April's fool joke today was a nice sunny day making us feel like it's Spring, only to bombard us with freezing rain tomorrow.

There's a section of my road further south where the water level is already at the shoulder. I worry the road will be flooded after this next storm. There's still so many trees down on the power lines and actual poles that have just snapped in half.

Ice storms are scary.

The kids and I stood outside Sunday just listening to the crunching and crashing of the forest. At times we could see the trees collapse in the distance. When the maple branches came down outside of the kitchen the boom it made was so loud.

This will be one for the memory books.

Dd text me. All the kids are ok. My brother and I set up their air mattresses and sleeping bags and they are camping in Baba's living room with snacks lol.

Glad I have my brothers big wool blanket and a few of his huge sweaters.

I'll be ok tonight. The dog is laying on my legs lol. I'm surprised dd's cat isn't here too. I found her in Dd's bed under the fuzzy blanket.

At 1:49am I woke up because tue dog was on my legs and I was trying to move her over when I realized lights were on.

Doesn't appear to be many of us on the grid they got working again since many people in town say they are still out and my kids bus driver who is just up thr road is still out.

It is very nice to have hot coffee but I'm remaining cautiously optimistic that the power stays on. Next storm is coming.

At least now I have the generator working.

When the power goes out I unplug most things and turn off thr breakers for the water heater and water pump.

The furnace control panel said it was 49 degrees F so I turned on all of the heaters. It's now 58F. Yay!

Nope the kitty stayed in Dd's bed.

The area where power was restored is very small. So many people around me, not that far away, still have no power.

I'm 100% sure it did the job!

A convoy of hydro trucks is in town now.

Someone posted that another tree came down on some lines but I don't know where exactly in town.

I told one person with little kids who said they still don't have power to head to one of the warming stations. She said she has a wood stove so they are warm but she's scared to leave the house because places are being broken into. Man it's a state of emergency and losers crawl out of the dirt to steal. mad

The police have posted a notice that everyone who doesn't live in the affected areas to remain away.
